Today I had forgotten about giving myself an...
Today I had
forgotten about giving myself an anxious miniphysical
every five minutes or soLike any normal personI could baby myself going back,
stopping every now and then to do one of Kathi
Green's side-stretches, which hurt like hell and
didn't seem to do much of anything else, or I
could just walkLike any normal unhurt person
I decided to go with thatBut before I started, I
glanced over my shoulder and saw a striped beach
chair a ways farther southThere was a table
beside it with an umbrella, striped like the chair,
over itA man was sitting in the chairWhat was
only a speck glimpsed from Big Pink had become a
tall, heavyset guy dressed in jeans and a white
shirt with sleeves rolled to the elbowsHis hair
183
was long and blowing in the breezeI couldn't
make out his features; we were still too far apart
for thatHe saw me looking and wavedI waved
back, then turned and began trudging for home
along my own footprintsThat was my costume jewelry chanel first
encounter with Wireman
ii
My final thought before turning in that night was
that I'd probably find myself hobbling through the
second day of the New Year almost too sore to walk
I was delighted to find that wasn't true; a hot
bath seemed to take care of the residual stiffness
So of course I struck off again the following
afternoonNo set goal; no New Year's resolution;
no Numbers GameJust a guy strolling on the beach,
sometimes veering close enough to the mild run of
the waves to scatter the peeps aloft in a smutchy
cloudSometimes I'd pick up a shell and put it in
my pocket (in a week I'd be carrying a plastic bag
to store my treasures in)When I got close enough
to make out the heavyset guy in some detail -
today wearing a blue shirt and khakis, almost
184
certainly barefoot - I once again turned and
headed back to Big PinkBut not before giving him
a wave, which he returned
That was the real beginning of my Great Beach
WalksEvery prada logos afternoon they got a little longer,
and I saw the heavyset man in his striped beach
chair a little more clearlyIt seemed obvious to
me that he had his own routine; in the mornings he
came out with the old lady, pushing her down a
wooden tongue of decking that I hadn't been able
to see from Big PinkIn the afternoons he came
out on his ownHe never took off his shirt, but
his arms and face were as dark as old furniture in
a formal homeBeside him, on his table, were a
tall glass and a pitcher that might have held ice
water, lemonade, or gin and tonicHe always waved;
I always waved back
One day in late January, when I had closed the
distance between us to not much more than an
eighth of a mile, a second striped chair appeared
on the sandA second glass, empty (but tall and
terribly inviting), appeared on the tableWhen I
waved, he first waved back and then pointed at the
empty chair

"Thanks, but not yet!" I called
"Hell, come on down!" he black chanel quilted called back"I'll give
you a ride back in the golf cart!"
I smiled at thatIlse had been all in favor of a
golf cart, so I could go racing up and down the
beach, scaring the peeps"Not in the game-plan,"
I yelled, "but I'll get there in time! Whatever's
in that pitcher - keep it on ice for me!"
"You know best, muchacho!" He sketched a little
salute"Meantime, do the day and let the day do
you!"
I remember all sorts of things Wireman said, but I
believe that's the one I associate with him the
most strongly, maybe because I heard him say it
before I knew his name or had even shaken his hand:
Do the day and let the day do you

Walking wasn't all Freemantle was about that
winter; Freemantle started to be about living
againAnd that felt fucking greatI came to a
decision one windy night when the waves were
pounding and the shells were arguing instead of
186
just conversing: When I knew this new way of
feeling was for real, I was going to take chanel classic bags Reba the
Anger-Management Doll down to the beach, douse her
with charcoal lighter-fluid, and set her ablaze
Give my other life a true Viking funeralWhy the
hell not?
In the meantime there was painting, and I took to
it like peeps and pelicans take to waterAfter a
week, I regretted having spent so much time
farting around with colored pencilsI sent Ilse
an e-mail thanking her for bullying me, and she
sent me one back, telling me she hardly needed
encouragement in that departmentShe also told me
that The Hummingbirds had played a big church in
Pawtucket, Rhode Island - sort of a tour warm-up -
and the congregation had gone wild, clapping and
shouting out hallelujahs"There was a good deal
of swaying in the aisles," she wrote"It's the
Baptist substitute for dancing
That winter I also made the Internet in general
and Google in particular my close personal friends,
pecking away one-handedWhen it came to Duma Key,
I found little more than gucci clearance a

"Any way you want it Brown rubbed his hand over his cropped brown hair, fingered a jungle ulcer on his chinHe felt vaguely guilty"Who'll I take?"
Croft reflected"How 'bout Ridges and Goldstein, Lootenant?"
"You know the men better than I
"Well, they ain't much fuggin good, but they're strong enough, an' if you push 'em, Brown, they ain't gonna goof-off on yaThey were awright when we carried Wilson back from where he got hit Croft looked at themHe remembered that Stanley and Red and Gallagher had almost got into a fight on the boatStanley had crawfished, and he wouldn't be much use nowStill, he was a smart kid, Croft thought, probably smarter than Brown
"Who else?"
"I fairy bag prada figure you need a good man since you got a coupla fug-upsHow about takin' Stanley?"
"Sure
Stanley was not certain what he wantedHe was relieved to be heading back for the beach, to be out of the patrol, but still he felt cheatedIf he stayed with the platoon, there would be better chances later with Croft and the LieutenantHe didn't want any more combat, not like that ambush certainly, but stillIt was Brown's fault, he told himself"If you think I oughta go, I'll go, Sam, but I kinda feel as if I ought to stay with the platoon
"Naw, you go with Brown Any answer would have left Stanley unsatisfiedIt was like spinning a coin to decide your decision, and wishing the coin had landed on chanel earrings stud the other side
Hearn scratched his armpitWhat a goddam mess! He chewed on some grass, spat it out quietlyWhen they had brought Wilson back, he had beenall right, he had been annoyedThat was the first emotion, the honest oneIf they hadn't found him the patrol would be relatively simple, and now they were shorthandedIt was a hell of a thing for a platoon leader to feelHe had to face some things; this patrol meant more to him than it shouldAnd everything was loused up, he didn't know what they were going to do nowHe had to get away by himself, think it out
"Where the hell are those men with the poles for the stretcher?" Croft asked irritablyHe was depressed for once, almost a little chloe black frightenedTheir talk was finished and they stood about uncomfortablyA few feet away, Wilson was moaning deliriously, shivering under his blanketHis face was very white, and his full red mouth had turned a leaden pink, pinched at the cornersWilson was one of the old men, and it hurt more, stirred him more, than if they had lost one of the replacementsThere were so few of the old men left -- Brown, and his nerves were shot; Martinez; Red, who was sick; and Gallagher, who wasn't much use nowThere were all the men who had been lost when the rubber boats were ambushed, the few others who had been wounded or killed in the months on MotomeIt made Croft wonder if his turn was coming dueHis chanel costume jewelry mind would never release the memory of the night when he had shuddered in his foxhole, waiting for the Japanese to cross the riverHis senses were raw, a little inflamedHe remembered with a thick lusting anger in his throat how he had killed the prisoner in the drawJust let me get ahold of a JapHe felt balked on this patrol, infuriated; his rage extended to include everythingHe stared up at Mount Anaka as if measuring an opponentAt that moment he hated the mountain too, considered it a personal affront
A hundred yards away, he could see the stretcher detail straggling back toward the hollow, the poles they had cut balanced on their shouldersHe restrained himself from calling out to omega deville watch

He chuckled, deciding instinctively to salve all...
He chuckled, deciding instinctively to salve all the sore spots of his mind"You know we had a lot of trouble on our marriage nightOf course we worked it out later but things weren't so good that first night
"Oh, everybody has that problem
"Sure, Listen, I'll tell ya, all these guys who are always braggin', even a guy like Wilson here He lowered his voice"Listen, you can't tell me they didn't have the same troublesIt's always hard to get adjusted
He liked GoldsteinThe amalgam of the night, the rustling of the leaves in the wood, worked subtly on him, opening the door to all his uncertainties"Look," he said abruptly, "what do you think of me?" He was still young enough to make this question the climax of any omega seamaster watch confidential talk Goldstein always answered a question like this by telling people what they wanted to hearHe was not being consciously dishonest; he always generated warmth for the person who asked him even if he had never been a friend"Mmm, I'd say that you're an intelligent fellow with your feet on the groundAnd you're kind of ambitious, which is a good thingI'd say you'll probably go places And until this moment he had never quite liked Stanley for exactly these reasons, although he had not admitted it to himselfGoldstein had a formal respect for successBut once Stanley had exposed his weaknesses, Goldstein was ready to make virtues of all his other qualities"You're mature for your age, very mature," Goldstein 925 tiffany's necklace finished
"Well, I've always tried to do more things than I had to Stanley fingered his long straight nose, scratched at his mustache, which had become scraggly in the past two days"I was president of our junior class in high school," he said deprecatingly"I don't mean that that's anything to beat my meat about, but it taught me how to get along with people
"It must have been a valuable experience," Goldstein said wistfully
"You know," Stanley confided, "a lot of the guys in the platoon are pissed off at me 'cause I came in after them and made corporalThey think I brown-nosed and there ain't a goddam bit of truth in thatI just kept my eyes open, and did what I was told to do, but I'll tell ya it's a damn sight harder job than you chanel 2.55 realizeThese guys who been around in the platoon for a long time, they think they own it, when all they do is fug-off on the details, and just try to make it hard for youThey give me a pain in the ass His voice became husky with admission"I know I got a tough job, and I don't say I haven't made mistakes, but I'm learning, and I want to try hardCould anyone ask for more than that?"
"No, they couldn't," Goldstein agreed
"I tell you, I've watched you, Goldstein, and you're a good manI've seen the way you work on details, and no noncom could ask for moreI don't want you to think it ain't appreciated Indefinably, Stanley felt superior to Goldstein once more; his voice, warm, pliable, had the faintest touch of condescensionHe was fake cartier watches the noncom talking to the rookieEffectively, he had forgotten that two minutes before he had waited tensely for Goldstein to say that he liked him
Goldstein was pleased, and yet his satisfaction was cloyedThat's what it's like in the Army, he told himselfThe opinion of a youngster is so important
Wilson was moaning againThey stopped talking, and turned about in their blankets, propped on their elbows to listenBrown, with a sigh, had sat up, and was trying to soothe him"What's the matter, boy, what's the matter?" he asked softly, as if trying to comfort a puppy
"Ohh, mah belly is killin' me
Brown wiped away his perspiration"Who's this talking to you, Wilson?"
"That's you, Brown, ain't it?"

Gallagher raised himself on an elbow"Aaah, I went canoeing once in a while out on the Charles, past West RoxburyUsed to go with my wife He said it first, and then thought about itHis face altered for an instant, assumed a numb stricken cast
"Oh, I'm sorry," Goldstein breathed Gallagher felt some irritation at getting sympathy from a Jew"Forget it," he added, a little meaninglesslyBut he was becoming tender again, dissolving in a bath of self-pity and pleasant gentle sorrow"Look," he said abruptly, "you got a kid, ain't ya?"
Goldstein nodded"Oh, yes," he answered eagerly"My boy is three years old nowWait, I'll show you a picture of him With some effort, he gucci bangle watch rolled over on the cot and withdrew his wallet from his back pocket"This isn't a good picture of him," Goldstein apologized, "he's really one of the handsomest children you could imagineWe've got a big picture at home of him that we had a professional photographer take, and honestly you couldn't beat it
Gallagher stared at the pictureyeah, he's a cute kid, all right He was a little bewildered, uncomfortable with the praise that welled clumsily out of his mouthHe looked at the picture again, seeing it really for the first time, and he sighedIn the one letter he had written home since Mary died he had asked for a picture of his childHe had been waiting with cheap tiffany's jewelry increasing impatience for it ever since, and it had become an important need in his lifeHe would idle away many dull inactive hours daydreaming about his child, wondering what it looked likeAlthough he had not been told, he assumed it was a boy"That's a real cute kid," he said in a rough voiceHe fingered the side of the cot for a momentSurmounting his embarrassment, he blurted, "Hey, what is it like, havin' a kid?"
Goldstein debated for a moment, as if to give the definitive answer He had been about to say "nochis "But there's a lot of heartaches in it tooYou worry about them a lot, and of course there are the economic difficulties Gallagher nodded his head in chloe paddington bags agreement
Goldstein went on talkingHe had some constraint, for Gallagher was the man he had hated most in the platoonThe warmth and friendliness he felt toward him now were perplexingGoldstein was self-conscious when he saw himself as a Jew talking to a Gentile; then every action, every word, was dictated to a great extent by his desire to make a good impressionAlthough he was gratified when people liked him, part of his satisfaction came from the idea that they were liking a JewAnd so he tried to say only the things that would please Gallagher
Yet in talking about his family, Goldstein experienced once more an automatic sense of loss and longingWistful images of seamaster de ville the beatitudes of married life drifted in his headHe remembered a night when his wife and he had giggled together in the darkness and listened to the quaint pompous snoring of their baby"Children are what makes life worth while," he said sincerely
Martinez realized with a start that he was a father tooHe remembered Rosalie's pregnancy for the first time in yearsSeven years now? Eight years? He had lost countGoddam, he said to himselfOnce he had been free of the girl he had remembered her only as a source of trouble and worry
The fact that he had begotten a child made him vainGoddam, I'm okay, he said to himselfHe felt like laughingMartinez make a kid and run black chanel quilted bag a

"General?" "Yes?" Now that it was over,...
"General?"
"Yes?" Now that it was over, Cummings wished that Hearn would leaveThe victory was losing its edge, and minor regrets, delicate little reservations, were cloying him
"Short of bringing in every man in the outfit, all six thousand of them, and letting them pick up your cigarettes, how are you going to impress them?"
This was the thing that had sullied his pleasureCummings realized it nowThere was still the other problem, the large one"I'll manage that, LieutenantI think you'd better worry about your own concerns
After Hearn had gone, Cummings looked at his hands"When there are little surges of resistance, it merely calls for more power to be directed downward And that hadn't worked with the line troopsHearn he had been able to crush, any single man he could manage, but the sum of them was different still, resisted him stillHe exhaled his breath, feeling a little wearyThere was going to be a way, he would find itThere had been a time when Hearn had resisted him too
And his elation, prada replica handbags suppressed until now, stimulated him, eased to some extent the sores and frustrations of the past few weeks

Hearn returned to his own tent, and missed lunchFor almost an hour he lay face down on his cot, burning with shame and self-disgust and an impossible impotent angerHe was suffering an excruciating humiliation which mocked him in its very intensityHe had known from the moment the General had sent for him that there would be trouble, and he had entered with the confidence that he wouldn't yield
And yet he had been afraid of Cummings, indeed, afraid of him from the moment he had come into the tentEverything in him had demanded that he refuse to pick up the cigarette and he had done it with a sick numbed suspension of his will
"The only thing to do is to get by on style He had said that once, lived by it in the absence of anything else, and it had been a working guide, almost satisfactory until nowThe only thing that had been important was to let no one in any ultimate issue ever violate your second hand chanel integrity, and this had been an ultimate issueHearn felt as if an immense cyst of suppuration and purulence had burst inside him, and was infecting his blood stream now, washing through all the conduits of his body in a sudden violent flux of changeHe would have to react or die, effectively, and for one of the few times in his life he was quite uncertain of his own abilityIt was impossible; he would have to do something, and he had no idea what to doThe moment was intolerable, the midday heat fierce and airless inside the tent, but he lay motionless, his large chin jammed into the canvas of his cot, his eyes closed, as if he were contemplating all the processes, all the things he had learned and unlearned in his life, and which were free now, sloshing about inside him with the vehemence and the agony of anything that has been suppressed for too long
"I never thought I would crawfish to him
That was the shock, that was the thing so awful to realize

The Time Machine:
ROBERT HEARN
THE ADDLED WOMB

A relojes omega big man with a shock of black hair and a small sharp voice, a heavy immobile faceHis brown eyes, imperturbable, stared out coldly above the short blunted and slightly hooked arc of his noseHis wide thin mouth was unexpressive, a top ledge to the solid mass of his chinHe liked very few people and most men sensed it uneasily after talking to him for a few minutes

In the center is the city, lashing at one's senses
For a thousand, two thousand miles the roads and the earth have led up to itThe mountains have snubbed down to hills, lapsed into plains, rolled on majestically in leisurely convolutions and regroupingsNo one ever really comprehends it, the vast table of America, and the pin points, the accretions, the big city and the iron trails leading to it
(All the frenetic schemings, the cigar smoke, the coke smoke, the carbolic and retch of the el, the frightened passion for movement of an ant nest suddenly jarred, the vast hurried grabbing plans of thousands of men whose importance is confined to a dolce and gabbana bags street, a caf?, and there is no other sense than one of the presentHistory is remembered with a shrug; its superlatives do not match ours
The immense ego of city people
How do you conceive your own death, your own unimportance in all that man-created immensity, through all the marble vaults and brick ridges and the furnaces that lead to the market place? You always believe somehow that the world will end with your deathIt is all more intense, more violent, more rutted than life anywhere else
And in the humus around the mushroom stem grow the suburbs

Since we added that last wing, we got twenty-two rooms now, Lord knows what the hell we're gonna do with 'em, Bill Hearn shoutsBut Ina you can't tell her a goddam thing, she figures she needs it, and we got it
